About this Talk

People experiencing homelessness are at a higher risk of ending their lives by suicide than the general population.  In this session:

  • Eva Bell, Participation Officer at Samaritans will provide an overview of what is known about suicide prevalence and suicide risk factors and how they relates to people’s experiences of homelessness and housing insecurity and share some of the resources available for building suicide prevention and postvention into practice
  • Tracey Hemmerdinger, Manager of Roundabout Safe Space (a unique project that supports 16-17 year olds who are struggling to manage their mental health by providing time away in a calm, supportive and non-judgmental environment) will talk about understanding the brain in crisis and the needs of someone experiencing suicidal ideation, and how this is provided for at Safe Space.

Qualified youth and community worker and trainer with over 30 years of experience in the field. Currently managing Safe Space, commissioned by the NHS, which offers up to 72 hours of respite to 16- and 17-year-olds in mental health crisis.

Participation Officer, Samaritans

Participation Officer at Samaritans and lead of the Suicide Prevention Consortium (SPC) working to influence policymaker to improve suicide prevention in England.
